"On My Own" Les Misérables Project, part 1

This is the first part of my larger kinetic typography project, a video of the song "On My Own" from Les Misérables. This is only the first stanza of the song, and my main goal at this point is to line up the audio with the visual. This is the first time I have attempted to match audio in AfterEffects, so I've had some difficulties with the controls (mainly because almost every tutorial I've found assumes that the individual is already proficient in AfterEffects). However, I think that the audio and words should be synced now and the text should be in straight lines with good spacing. I plan to add in effects and change the formatting after I finish matching the music and the lyrics for the rest of the song.

Second Attempt

This is my second attempt at kinetic typography in AfterEffects, and I suppose it's a bit better than the last. It's still rather low-quality, but I experimented with the different Effects & Presets until I found some that I liked. I also played around with the timing of the words and the positioning until it didn't look quite as dreadful. It still seems a bit choppy to me, but I'll try to work that out in the future.

Very First AfterEffects Thing

So, this is the very first thing I've ever done in Adobe AfterEffects. I'm not very proficient at the program yet, so this is really poor quality. But I did learn how to use keyframes, change composition length, and work on timing, so it's not a complete loss. All the knowledge I used for this was gained from videos on YouTube and Vimeo.

Wet Ink Typography-Drown the Ocean

I made these images using the same tutorial as my previous post. I experimented with some of the newer Photoshop features, including the Image>Adjustments>Variations option and the new Iris Blur option. The first image has an Iris Blur applied to the text, the second image has a Field Blur applied to the text, the third image has no special features applied, the fourth image has the text blend mode set to Overlay and duplicated, and the fifth image has the same text effect as the fourth , as well as additional brush splatters in the background.

Wet Ink Typography-Seize the Night

I made this image using mainly this tutorial, but I also incorporated some elements of the Inked Typography tutorial from one of my previous posts. I like the effect that the water/ink drops and coffee cup stains produce, and  the effect of the rendered clouds make it look more aged. I think some of the letters might be too cluttered, but I've been staring at these words too long and I honestly can't tell. I decided to use the text "Seize the Night" because our band's theme for this year's marching show was "Carpe Noctem" ("seize the night" in Latin).

Design Text Only

This is the graphic design version of the animation image I made last time. I like this one too, but I couldn't quite get the space between the letters to behave as I wanted.

Animation Text Only

Using this tutorial, I made a simple image in Photoshop using only the word "Animation." I am personally fond of this style, and I like the simplicity of the tutorial and the ease of adaptation. I had to make relatively few modifications to the overall design to accommodate my new text.
